Tech Tip: Hardware News and Stereo Set Up

Hardware News

The monitor industry appears to be experiencing a technology shift. Last year, most brands stopped production of their “3DVision Ready” monitors. You could still buy other non-3DVision-ready 120/144Hz monitors and connect them using an active DisplayPort to DVI adapter, but it wasn’t as convenient as connecting the monitor directly to DisplayPort. The reason DisplayPort is so important is that most of the newer nVidia Quadro cards only have DisplayPorts.

Some new monitors are now coming onto the market that either say they’re “3DVision Ready” or users report that they work direct to DisplayPort. The ones that users have recently reported having success with are:

Disclaimer: Monitors listed here are not guaranteed to work with OpenGL stereo and nVidia 3DVision. We know they worked for at least one hardware configuration. Your video card and computer may give different results.

We expect more compatible monitor models to come onto the market soon.

There is a big change in the price of these new monitors compared to the older technology. The older 3DVision-ready monitors were in the $350(USD) range. The new monitors are in the $700(USD) range.

We have experienced several shifts in 3D viewing technology in the past, and such a price difference is not unexpected when it happens. The two monitors listed above are quite improved compared to the old ones. You may find the difference in price is well worth it.
